2018 Honda Civic Type R Update from Paris Motor Show

Honda finally decided to show us pre-production version of Civic Type R. Despite being called a prototype by Honda we are actually 99% looking at the 2018 Honda Civic Type R. This is first Type R model that will land on the U.S. shores, and God was he expected. Official presentation took place at the 2016 Paris Motor Show while the release date is scheduled for spring of 2017. The car will be as known from earlier be sold as 2018 MY. American presentation should occur at the upcoming SEMA in Las Vegas or in Los Angeles Auto Show later this year. Type R prototype looks more like a racing car than one designed for the roads. Despite this, under all those carbon fiber details, aggressive vents and fenders standard Civic can still be distinguished.

2018 Honda Civic Type R has been revised all around and small details and pieces of that and this can be spotted all over the car. Honda decided to bring Type R to U.S. and this model is more than ready to make a statement. Unfortunately, Honda didn’t disclose any details about cars power-train. According to rumors that have been around from earlier the car will use 2.0-liter four-cylinder VTEC turbocharged engine. The Same engine is being used by current Type R Honda Civic. This drive-train can produce 306hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. All of this power will be transmitted to front wheels trough six-speed manual transmission.

REVIEW

Even though the Type R has been missing from the US market for a lot of time now, the European market did receive a model for the latest generation of the Civic. While it is not as fast as some of its competitors, the car was received with a lot of positive praise which made Honda think again about the US model. Unfortunately, this car is expected to be released with the 2018 Honda Civic Type R and unlike the European version which is available as a hatchback only, it seems that the US market might only receive a sedan model which would be quite interesting to see.

This is mostly because the usual hatchback Type R will very likely get replaced by the upcoming CR-Z. While this is still going to be a Civic, it will basically take all the customers from the regular hatchback. The interesting part is the new platform which should allow Honda to build a very interesting Type R. You might think that there are no competitors for a fast sedan but think again.

The upcoming Audi S3, the new WRX, and the WRX Sti are all going to be competing with the new Civic. This should put the new Honda at roughly $30,000 which would be around $5,000 less than the CR-Z and in line with some of its rivals.

ENGINE

There are some downsides to the smaller price of the 2018 Honda Civic Type R though and the largest of them all is going to be the powertrain. This is because Honda will have two different versions of the same car basically and they will have to make them different. The CR-Z is definitely going to be the new top of the line model which will make the Civic Type R the equivalent of the WRX to the WRX STI. There is still no word on the engine it will boast but all things considered, a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 is very likely going to be installed under its hood.

The CR-Z is expected to make over 300 horsepower in order to be a competitive hot-hatchback. In contrast, the Type R Civic is more likely going to get close to 280 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. This should still be plenty powerful to make it a devilishly fast car but thanks to the fact it will not be the top end model it should mean a couple of things.

REVIEW OF HONDA CIVIC TYPE R

Firstly, the new Type R might be offered not only as a front wheel drive 6-speed manual model but also with an automatic and possibly an all-wheel drive system. This setup might make it a favorite in its class and consider, the new engine, it should also be quite fast as well. Secondly, the car will definitely get a softer suspension system.

This might seem like a bad thing at first but the softer settings will allow it to be more forgiving. This means that it will allow average drivers to be faster in it than they would be in a CR-Z which is a lot more important on the road.

DESIGN

So far Honda’s new Civic is the closest we have to the future 2018 Honda Civic Type R. Like with most high-performance cars, the new Type R should get a new body kit that will make it look more aggressive and it will make it faster, new wheels and tires, possibly a rear spoiler and even a fancier interior. However, instead of going all-out on its cabin, Honda is definitely going to use more comfortable seats and similar materials to the CR-Z. This will make the Type-R a better buy for those looking for a daily driver.
