G-Class is better known as Geländewagen in Germany, or simply G-Wagen. This German word can be translated as “cross-country vehicle” and it definitely deserves this name. This is a mid-size luxury SUV that debuted 37 years ago. Many dislike the boxy shape of the car and we must admit it doesn’t look attractive with these sharp edges. However, don’t judge a book by its cover. This all-wheel drive SUV has a lot of offer, it just depends on what you need. In this article, we would like to present 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a vehicle that hasn’t been released yet but was spotted on the streets. There is scarce info about it, but it was easy to conclude several things.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review

The main issue with the G-Class is that it has never got a huge overhaul. When you look through the past several decades you will easily see that every model looks almost the same. Luckily, Mercedes-Benz put this vehicle into focus and finally redesigned it. They were even thinking of discontinuing this model. However, big demand from the U.S., China and Russia couldn’t be neglected. New G-Class is getting a modern look. Although new model is going to be upgraded, its shape should remain the same. Perhaps Mercedes-Benz can think a little bit about a profound redesign. It would be great for the sales if G-Class had few rounded corners.

Powertrain

Current models have several petrol and diesel engine options. A V6 turbodiesel has been used since 2009 and it can deliver 221 horsepower and 398 of torque. Petrol variants are more powerful and the top unit generates 500 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. There are many rumors about the engine of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Many believe that this is going to be the first model to have a hybrid powertrain. However, Mercedes-Benz hasn’t made any comment on this speculation thus we still don’t know whether this is true or not. Nevertheless, we believe there are going to be at least three different units.

Allegedly, new G-Class is going to use new inline-6 engine and 4.0-liter turbocharged V8. Apart from these two units, a twin-turbocharged V12 should be offered. However, the last one is likely to be only a rumor and nothing more. There are no details about horsepower, torque, and towing capacity but you shouldn’t expect lower figures. EPA rating hasn’t been released as well but no significant improvements are expected. The current model uses a seven-speed automatic gearbox while the 2019 model is getting nine-speed automatic transmission system. Perhaps Mercedes-Benz even decides to retain a 7-speed automatic on all-wheel drive model.

Exterior and Interior Review

Unfortunately, there is not going to be a major redesign of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class in terms of its shape. Upgrades and modifications are expected but the shape is going to remain boxy. There are no rounded lines once again. Nonetheless, the 2019 Mercedes G-Class is going to be the most modern G-Class so far with great aerodynamics. Some of the new features are an exterior-mounted spare wheel, tailgate, and windshield. It is important to mention that a new version will be 4 inches larger than the present model.

At this point, it is really difficult to discuss the interior since we couldn’t sneak a peek inside the cabin. We do expect that interior is going to follow the exterior and there are going to be several upgrades. However, we must be patient and wait to see what features are going to be changed.
