The current WRX STI has been around for a long time and even though the chassis of the car has been revamped a few times, its EJ engine is the same as it was more than a decade ago so it offers its torque quite high up the rev range and it is not really the easiest to work on or even the most efficient out there. The engine will likely be based on the unit that equips the WRX which is a new-generation boxer engine that can provide a lot more torque at lower revs and it is also quite a bit more efficient as well. A 6-speed manual is still likely going to be the only available option for the STI but thanks to a really clever all-wheel drive system and a lot of electronic control aids, the car should be quite a bit faster than most hot hatchbacks on the market today.
EXTERIOR
Not too long ago we have seen a camouflaged hatchback Impreza which had the entire body kit of the WRX installed but it seems Subaru is not going to release the WRX or the STI in five-door body styles. Instead, the new STI is still going to be a sedan but this time around it will get a much cleaner and likely high-end design than that of the current model which looks like it has been drawn by a small kid.
Expect a much smaller wing at the back, an integrated splitter in the front bumper, wider wheel arches, and a more muscular design, all meant to make it appeal to a much larger audience than before.
INTERIOR
Helping it sell better will also be the interior which will be a lot better than the one of the current model. In fact, the 2017 Subaru WRX STI and its smaller brother, the WRX, are both going to receive unique interiors with electric front and rear seats.
The STI will receive ventilated and heated front seats, a navigation and infotainment unit that will support most phones while the seats are still going to offer plenty of support while being comfortable. The largest update inside the cabin will be the materials used which are all going to offer a more premium experience than before.
2017 SUBARU WRX STI RELEASE DATE AND PRICE
While this is a certainty, it seems that by the end of 2017 Subaru will be releasing the all new Impreza on which the upcoming STI is going to be based on. This will be the first STI to be based on an all-new modular platform which will be more structurally rigid than the current one and likely lighter as well. The standard all-wheel drive system is here to stay and its $35,000 base price is also likely going to stay the same as before which would allow it to further compete with cars such as the Golf R or the upcoming Lancer Evo.
