In a full process of redesigning themselves, Volvo released three all new cars on the market, all of them being high-end executive models. The XC90 crossover, the S90 sedan and quite recently the 2018 Volvo V90 station wagon. The latter is expected to hit the market in the mid of 2017 and it is based one the same platform as the other two models. Volvo’s SPA platform is a highly modular chassis designed specifically for these three cars. In the future, it might be adapted to their lower end models but in the meantime, the three are going to benefit from it.
2018 VOLVO V90 PRICE AND SPECS
The new 2018 Volvo V90 is a rather interesting car because it is one of the very few on the market. Many people moved to crossovers for their dose of wagons while those still preferring them don’t really have many options. The car is expected to hit the US market first where many of the automotive journalists absolutely loved the concept.
It offers all the benefits of a large crossover while being lower to the ground and much better to drive. There is still no word on the pricing scheme of the upcoming model but considering the other two expect the V90 to start around $48,000 and go up from there.
EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN
The rather low price is there because Volvo wants to make a name for themselves as an executive car maker. The good part is that the 2018 Volvo V90 will most likely allow them to do just that. However, there are some issues that still need addressing. On top of that, the design of the car is not really to everyone’s taste even though many said it looks amazing. The front is very similar to the XC90 crossover and nearly identical to the sedan.
The profile looks great as well being a very long car with a low roof. This makes the wagon look more like a shooting brake. The wheelbase is nearly 116 inches as well and its width does allow for great interior space. The back of the car, on the other hand, manages to combine the subtle look of the sedan with the great looking vertical tail lights. The end result is a nearly perfect looking wagon which is surely going to give BMW problems with their 5 Series Touring.
Just like with the S90, the cabin of the new V90 will be nearly identical to that of the crossover. The three will share the same dashboard design with the very simple styling. This creates a really nice environment to be in with a center screen which controls pretty much all the car’s functions. The steering wheel is going to be nicely wrapped in leather even on the base model and the driving position should be better than that of the crossover.
DRIVETRAIN OPTIONS OF 2018 VOLVO V90
There are going to be three different engine options in the 2018 Volvo V90. The base T5 is going to use a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine. This will offer 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and it will drive the front wheels only via an 8 speed automatic. Two additional models are going to be offered for those wanting more. The T6 and T8 are both going to get a 2 liter supercharged and turbocharged inline 4 unit offering 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both of these will use an all-wheel-drive system and an 8 speed automatic.
The only difference will be the addition of an electric motor and a set of batteries for the T8. This hybrid powertrain will provide 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque and it should allow the V90 to compete with V6 and V8 engined competitors.
