The Civic Si is the sporty version of the regular Civic which has been available on the US market for a really long time. The car used a really simple recipe offering a naturally aspirated engine and a manual transmission. While not the fastest out there, it offered plenty of fun for the price. However, the car is no longer in production as an entirely new generation of the Civic has been launched a while ago. With it, the 2017 Honda Civic Si should follow shortly.
2017 HONDA CIVIC SI PRICE
The car has been spied a couple of weeks ago wearing very little camouflage and it seems that it will look a lot like the concept showcased back in March. While not official at this point, the price is expected to be hovering around $25,000 which is where all of its competitors are.
PLATFORM AND RUNNING GEAR
Just like with the new Civic, the upcoming Si is going to be based on the same Global Compact architecture which will also underpin the next CR-V and Accord. This modular platform should offer more rigidity and better suspension components. The end result should be a better to drive a car that won’t lose any of its practicality or comforts.
DESIGN
Like we said, the car spied a while ago is quite interesting. In fact, it does share a fair amount of components with the concept which is great as the concept is one of the better-looking cars Honda released in the recent years. The US market is going to receive its coupe, and most likely sedan versions, while Europe will only get the hatchback. The hatchback might also be imported for the US market but this hasn’t been confirmed up until now. Over the base Civic, the Si will get a sportier-looking front end with a new bumper. At the back, it will also receive a center-mounted exhaust flanked by a large diffuser. A wing is not present on the camouflaged car but considering the concept did have one it might be present on the production car as well.
INTERIOR OF 2017 HONDA CIVIC SI
The 2017 Honda Civic Si also features a slightly upgraded cabin over the base model. Honda didn’t release the official specs just yet but the photographed prototype did feature a leather and Alcantara-wrapped interior, new sports seats with integrated headrests and larger side bolsters and it also seems to be similarly equipped to a top of the range Civic.
ENGINE
Previously the Si featured a 2 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 engine with 205 horsepower and little over 170 lb-ft of torque. Due to the low amount of torque, the engine felt a bit underpowered for the car and it lost against cars like the Focus ST. The new 2017 Honda Civic Si has been confirmed to use a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine, the same found on the Type R. However, it will be tuned to offer between 220 and 230 horsepower which is more in line with what its competitors are capable of. Also, the torque will considerably increase over what the previous model was offering.
Rumors suggest for as much as 240 lb-ft of torque which is quite a bit considering the car will most definitely remain front wheel drive. Also, due to the class, it will compete in, a six-speed manual transmission is most likely going to be the only offering. With the help of the added torque, better chassis and likely improved gearbox, the car will most likely manage to get in line with cars like the Golf GTI or the Focus ST. Also, no matter if the buyer will get the coupe, sedan or hatchback, the car should be just as fast as the weight difference between the three will be minimal.
